  1. Aaron great question – the answer to your question is addressed in the National Day Camp Standards – M44. All day camp staff members must be at least 14 years of age. Den
chiefs under 14 may only attend day camp if they are serving as a den chief for the same Cub Scout/Webelos den that they serve in the local pack. Youth under the age of 14 may volunteer to help at the camp (but are not considered staff members) if under the direct supervision of a parent, guardian,or Boy Scout troop leader. Since I don’t have boys of scouting age it is my understanding that as a general rule most (not all) 1st Class scouts are of the Age of 14 thus the requirement of 1st Class in previous National Camp Standards.

Based on the above standard no he cannot be a camp aide if he in not 14 as of the date of camp. But yes he can help if under the supervision of a parent/guardian or Boy Scout troop leader who is also attending camp as a volunteer staff member.

  2. OK. The reason I ask is that Max would like to volunteer. He should sew on First Class within about a month. He is 11. Can we figure out a way to make this work?

  3. Glenda is correct in her explanation. The way to make it work, he can be a volunteer, with adult supervision. i do not see why this would not qualify for service hours towards his Star. Let him have fun, keep him safe is the main thing, we hope he learns leadership[ in the process.
